How EuroJackpot Works

To play, you pick 5 numbers from a pool of 1 to 50, then 2 numbers from a separate pool of 1 to 12. These 2 numbers are called Euro balls.

The lottery draw selects 5 winning numbers from the main pool and 2 winning Euro balls. You win a prize if your combination matches the drawn numbers in any of the 12 prize tiers.

The jackpot requires all 7 numbers to match: the 5 main balls and both Euro balls. No supplementary ball exists in EuroJackpot.

The structure differs from some other lotteries because the Euro balls are a separate draw mechanism. This creates a wider range of prize tiers than a single-drum system would.

Prize Tiers and Odds

EuroJackpot has 12 prize divisions. The top prize starts at a minimum guaranteed amount and grows with ticket sales until someone wins it. Lower tiers have fixed prize amounts determined by the rules.

The odds of winning any prize on a single ticket are roughly 1 in 26. This takes into account all 12 tiers combined.

The jackpot itself has odds of 1 in 95,344,200 (5 from 50 times 2 from 12). Matching the 2 Euro balls and missing all main numbers still wins a prize. The exact odds for each tier depend on the mathematical relationship between the main ball pool and the Euro ball pool.

Because the Euro balls are drawn from a smaller pool of 12, matching both is more probable than matching all 5 main numbers. This is why the prize structure includes tiers for partial matches on the main balls combined with full Euro ball matches.

Draw Schedule and Timing

EuroJackpot draws occur twice per week: every Tuesday and every Friday. Both draws use the same game rules and prize structure.

Draw times are typically set to a fixed time in the evening, though the exact hour may vary by country due to coordination across the transnational operator network. Check your local lottery information for cutoff times.

Results are published within hours of the draw. The lottery publishes all winning numbers, the number of winners at each tier, and the prize amounts distributed.

Odds, EV, and Syndicate Math

The overall odds of winning any prize are about 1 in 26. This is a useful metric for comparing EuroJackpot to other lotteries. Higher odds of some prize do not mean higher expected value, because most prizes are small relative to the ticket cost.

Expected value is negative for any lottery ticket. A ticket costs money upfront. The prizes paid out across all tiers, on average, are less than the total revenue from all tickets sold. The operator keeps the difference.

In syndicate play, multiple people buy tickets and share any winnings. The mathematical advantage is simple: more tickets mean more combinations covered. If a syndicate of 10 people each buys one ticket, they cover 10 times as many combinations as a single player. If one ticket wins, the prize is divided by 10, but the odds of the syndicate winning something were 10 times higher. Syndicates do not improve expected value, but they spread risk and allow smaller players to cover more combinations.

Some syndicates use systems that cover specific subsets of numbers. This can increase the chance of a smaller prize while reducing coverage of larger prizes. The math remains zero-sum: no strategy changes the house edge.
